Bullies BBQ, a long-time local favorite for island residents and visitors, has announced it will reopen its doors May 1.

With over a decade of history (full of delicious BBQ), the restaurant’s founder, Bob Sutton, decided to retire and sell the restaurant space to new owners at the end of 2022.

Bullies then became completely employee-owned and operated.

In that short-lived two-year hand-off, the buyers decided to give the space back to Sutton at the end of 2024, who has been working diligently to reopen the BBQ joint for customers and take a pause from retirement.

Now, that time has finally come. According to Sutton, Bullies BBQ will be back and ready to welcome customers this May.

Bullies BBQ was founded in Hilton Head in 2012 and is known and loved for its operations as an old-school, counter-service style restaurant, combining South Carolina cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere.

The name, “Bullies BBQ”, echoes Sutton’s love for French Bulldogs. If you visit, you’ll find dozens of photos of his beloved dogs around the restaurant, adding a unique and personal touch to the space.

With this reopening of the establishment, Sutton is partnering with local businessman Jeff Haines to operate the restaurant.

Haines currently owns a painting and lapidary business. His daughter, Brisa Adame, is also stepping in and taking on the operations manager role.

Located in an old gas station, Bullies has been a favorite among locals and visitors to Hilton Head.

“We’re excited to all be together again,” Sutton said. “It’s almost like a class reunion.”

Bullies offers an array of BBQ meats and sides, available for both dine-in, delivery and takeout.

Chef Bob Sutton is known for his South Carolina pulled pork recipe. Bullies also slow-smoke most of their meat items over Hickory and Mesquite woods.

Their ribs smoke for up to 6 hours, while pork and briskets up to 14 hours in our large capacity smoker.

To enter the Sea Pines Resort, guests are asked to pay a $9 cash gate fee for a day pass.

These fees for day passes go toward road maintenance, transportation, security, leisure trails and administration, according to the Sea Pines CSA. The fees also offset the costs incurred by property owners to provide resort services to visitors.

According to previous reporting, Sea Pines generates roughly $4 million annually from these gate fees.

However, that fee can be gifted right back to your wallet with this insider tip.

When guests spend $25 or more at any Sea Pines Resort dining location, the $9 gate fee required to enter the resort will be reimbursed directly from your bill.

Tucked off a dirt road on the edge of Coosaw Island, the stretch of salt marsh looks unassuming at first glance. But upon closer inspection, visitors can see a well ordered grid dug into the earth. These structures make up the remains of a sea island cotton field, worked and created by enslaved labor from the late 1700s until the Civil War.

The 123-acre site is now permanently protected. Through a collaboration between The Open Land Trust and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the property, now known as the Coosaw Sea Island Cotton Heritage Preserve, is one of few sites in the Southeast that contains visible markers of sea island cotton production. In addition to preserving open space and habitat, the preserve also holds great significance for the Gullah community.

“It was a good thing to stand where my ancestors’ blood, sweat and tears, literally, is in the sand,” Queen Quet, chiefess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, said during the dedication ceremony Tuesday.

The former cotton fields were first noticed by Beekman Webb, a local naturalist and musician, and his wife Kathy they explored the islands during the early months of the pandemic. Understanding that the structure was not of natural origin, Webb enlisted researchers to take a closer look at the property and they confirmed his suspicions.

The remaining beds and rows of drainage ditches on the property were created and maintained by enslaved people who cultivated sea island cotton, a strain with extra-long fibers that made it particularly valuable. Enslaved people created similar structures across the Lowcountry, though few remain visible today.

“It’s an engineering masterpiece,” Queen Quet said. “African people don’t often get credit for their intellectual prowess that was brought here and planted in Sea Island soil.”

The Open Land Trust initially acquired the land for the preserve from three separate families. The land trust had the right of first refusal should one of those families ever get an offer, said Kate Schaefer, director of land protection at The Open Land Trust. They decided to purchase the parcels, along with two other pieces of land from separate families.

A local land trust is able to move faster to purchase these properties than a state agency, Schaefer said. So they held onto the land for a while, but ultimately the goal was always to hand it over to the DNR Heritage Trust Program, which purchased the land for a little more than $500,000.

“But that was the whole point, from the beginning, to make sure this resource could be enjoyed by the public, “ Schaefer said. “A DNR Heritage Trust Preserve was the best way to make sure that could happen in a respectful way.”

At the moment, there are no amenities on the site beyond two benches. Before any other infrastructure can be added, DNR needs to conduct an archaeological survey and create a management plan. Going forward, the site could also be a good candidate for prescribed burns, Brain Long, cultural heritage preserves manager with the department, said.

Jodi Barnes, the DNR heritage preserves archaeologist, said that it’s possible to find remnants of early Native American presence in the area, along with signs of early colonial trade and the Civil War and plantation era.

When plantation owners fled the region following the Civil War, Gullah/Geechee families cultivated the land, earning a living from truck farms and other businesses. Records show that on Coosaw Island, four of those landowners fought during the war in the United States Colored Troops, regiments composed largely of African Americans.

A number Gullah/Geechee farmers owned portions of the preserve up through the beginning of the 20th century as well. Barnes said they hope to learn about their lives across time.

Beyond the historical significance, the preserve is also near Morgan Island and other protected lands, so it helps to create a habitat corridor across the area.

“Now that they are protected forever, they provide a really special, rural place for all of us to come and enjoy the solace of nature on the edge of a growing community,” Schaefer said.

Justin Thomas ended a victory drought of nearly three years when he dropped a birdie putt of 21 feet in sudden death at the Habour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, S.C., on April 20 to win the RBC Heritage over Andrew Novak.

Thomas (68) and Novak (68) ended regulation at 17-under-par 267. They returned to the par-4 18th hole and after both found the fairway, Thomas pumped a 9-iron from 170 yards on the green and Novaky hit a gap wedge from 160 yards away, but barely found the front of the putting surface.

Novak missed from 54 feet and Thomas drained the putt for his 16th PGA Tour title and first since he won the PGA on May 22, 2022, at Southern Hills.

The two players were tied at 16-under with five holes left. Thomas birdied No. 15 on a putt of 24 feet, then parred out. Novak caught Thomas with a putt of nearly 17 feet at No. 16, then two-putted from the fringe at No. 17 from 27 and missed an 8-foot birdie attempt at the last.

Thomas earned $3.6 million from the $20 million purse for a PGA Tour Signature Event, plus 700 FedEx Cup points. He moved to second behind Rory McIlroy, who took the week off, in both categories, and now has $6,920,644 in earnings.

It was the second playoff in a row on the PGA Tour and the fifth this season, including the Masters and The Players Championship, which Rory McIlroy won both times.

It also was the third playoff in the last four years at the RBC Heritage, and the eighth in the last 16 years.

Novak, who went to college in South Carolina at Wofford, has posted three finishes of third or better this season and is still seeking his first PGA Tour title.

Brian Harman (69), who grew up in nearby Savannah, Ga., Daniel Berger (65), Mackenzie Hughes (67) and Maverick McNealy (70) tied for third at 14-under. Tommy Fleetwood (70) was seventh at 13-under and defending champion Scottie Scheffler (70), Russell Henley (70) and 54-hole leader Si Woo Kim (74) tied for eighth at 12-under.

Kim, who began the day with the lead at 15-under, made a quick bogey at No. 3, added more at Nos. 10 and 12, and doubled the 14th to fall out of contention.

Securing parking at Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island has long been a challenge for visitors, but an upcoming development aims to improve accessibility. By Memorial Day, 89 free parking spaces will be available at a newly repurposed lot.

The site, formerly occupied by Aunt Chilada’s restaurant, has been undergoing demolition following its closure in September. Hilton Head town officials have confirmed that the town acquired the property in October for $2.9 million, with the objective of expanding public parking options.

The existing 89 parking spaces will be sealed and restriped to ensure they are ready for public use by the start of the summer season.

This initiative follows the recent implementation of paid parking for the island’s public beaches, which took effect last month. Town officials anticipate that the introduction of free parking at this site will help alleviate concerns regarding parking accessibility and associated fees.

While no additional parking spaces will be added to the lot in 2024, officials will evaluate potential enhancements following the conclusion of the current beach season.

In a related effort to further expand parking availability, the town has also acquired the former Wild Wing Cafe property, located across the street. Plans for the site’s development are under consideration, with the potential for additional parking facilities.

As the summer season approaches, these strategic initiatives aim to improve the parking experience at Coligny Beach, benefiting both residents and visitors. Further updates on future parking solutions are expected as town officials assess long-term infrastructure improvements.
